The Part Of Speech Tagging Study Of 《Yunwu Wang Dictionary》

Part of speech is a generalization of word’s grammatical function, also is thecategory attribution of grammatical function in certain parts of speech systems. It isthe most direct and effective method that part of speech was annotated in dictionary.Because of the lagging research on Chinese grammar, most of the former dictionarieshave no part of speech annotation. With the depth of Chinese language studies, thedevelopment of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and the progress of Chineseinformation processing technology, moreover, owing to the continuous developmentand progress of Chinese grammar and Chinese language dictionary theory, a numberof modern Chinese dictionary have published which have the part of speechannotation. At the same time, the research on part of speech annotation of Chinesedictionary has become the hot issues between grammar and lexicographical workcircle. However, the articles in this aspect aim at several modern Chinese dictionariesas the object of research.The research object of this paper is “Yunwu wang Dictionary”, which is the firstdictionary that has the part of speech annotation and has published in1930s. Wecompare the word literally between “Yunwu wang Dictionary”(the fifth edition). and“Modern Chinese Dictionary” by analysis, and also compare the part of speechconcretely between this two dictionaries from word system, part of speech annotationand the difference between this two dictionaries etc. At the same time, the article havediscussed two issues about the influence of part of speech annotation on theseparation of meaning， the choise of the words and the examples used to explain andthe marking of eoncurrent words. Through variance analysis of part of speechannotation, we explore the deep reason of the differences of part of speech annotationbetween the two dictionaries from the history of modern Chinese history and modernChinese grammar perspectives. Finally, the paper points out several problems of partof speech annotation in some dictionaries. Constructive comments are made on someproblems that need attention and improvement of the future works in part of speechannotation, which are in order to perfect the dictionary compiling, improve the quality,promote the development of the Chinese grammar theory, and deepen the research onontology.
