Portrayal bricks, also called brick-paintings, or known as mural bricks, are theimportant image decorations of the walls for the ancients to construct ancestral halls, coffinchambers, stone-doors and so on, which began at the late warring states period, were in voguefor a lavish funeral in Han Dynasty, Innovated in the time of Wei-Jin southern and NorthernDynasties and widely spread during to the period of Sui, Tang, Song and Yuan Dynasties.Most of the mural bricks are one brick bearing one painting, succinct in drawing and vivid inimage, Most of the grave brick of Wei-Jin Dynasties in Hexi Corridor mainly scatter overthe municipalities of Jiayuguan, Jiuquan and Zhangye and Gaotai county, and other places, asin the geographical appearance of Hexi Corridor,the distribution of the group-grave brickpaintings of Wei-Jin Dynasties in Hexi corridor also presents the charateristics of long,narrow, belt and scattered places. The brick paintings of Wei-Jin Dynasties of hexi Corrdorsystematically reflect the contents of politics, economy, culture army, customs science andtechnology. etc. of the period of wei-Jin Dynasties.The paintings are mainly based on Chinesetraditional painrealistically style, and take account of the style of painting realistically orexaggerating. The time of the birth might be ahead of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. The articlefocuses on the purpose of the research and its meaning, and takes investigating comment andselecting topics as the starting point, mainly analyses comprehensively a great varity ofdesigns, colours, figures, themes, models, decorations, etc.of the grave brick-paintings of theperiod of Wei-Jin Dynasties of Hexi Corridor.We should use the rules of formal beauty of decorative paintings of change and unity,symmetry and balance, rhythm and rhyme scheme, contrast and harmonious to analyse andexplain the decorative character of the grave brick-paintings of Wei-Jin Dynasties of hexiCorridor.we from the view point of model of decorative paintings, analyse handling of thedecorationization of the grave brick paintings of Wei-Jin Dynasties of hexi Corridor,i.e, turnthe objective into the subjective, turn the three-dimensimal into plane, turn paint realisticallystyle into exaggerating style, turn the miscellaneous into orderlineness, turn the simple intothe abundant, and turn the handling rule of the decorative model as a natural ideal one: That isto analyse concretely the brick paintings from the view point of the essential rule of thedecorative design, from balance and symmetry, from symmetry and echo, from entirety andharmonization. Theold Hexi art of the ancient times can be discovered, drawn for relevance and used in modernsociety.
