Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, emphasizing the readers’ reflection, makes the readers of the target language respond substantially the same manner as the readers in the source language in the closest natural equivalent language.Popular science articles, commonly with the characteristics of being objective, scientific and artistic, are illustrative articles aiming to explain scientific knowledge, communicate scientific information and popularize scientific education. The selection of word meaning during the Chinese-English translation of popular science articles has a direct influence on the quality of the translated articles. Therefore, it is of great significance to discuss how to select proper word meaning to achieve the closest natural equivalence to the source language.Based on the translation practice of popular science articles, this thesis discusses the selection of word meaning in Chinese-English translation of popular science articles. Besides focusing on the translation principle of being closest and natural to the source language in the first part of this paper, the author also overviews the origin, development and main contents of Nida’s Equivalence Theory. The second part introduces popular science articles and Sci-Tech articles, analyzes and compares their features respectively before the distinction of purposes, language styles and discourse structures between these two different styles is summarized. On the basis of the detailed analysis, the characteristics and classification of vocabulary in popular science articles are further stated. From the perspective of Nida’s Functional Equivalence, the third part lays an emphasis on discussing the selection of word meaning in Chinese-English translation of popular science writings from the aspects of context by abundant examples illustrated. In the end, this paper concludes ways of word meaning selection in English-Chinese translation of popular science articles and the future of research on this issue is proposed.
