Popular science books are of great significance for the general public to acquire cutting-edge scientific information. The sharing of scientific and technological knowledge has become a trend of the community of shared future of mankind. At present,a large number of popular science translations have emerged in the market, but due to the timeliness of popular science books and the lack of unified translation quality standards, the quality of the translations on the market is not satisfactory. The author selected some readable articles from the scientific journal Science as the original text of this translation project, mainly for the following reasons:firstly, the content of this section is different from that of academic papers,so it is practical for MTI students to get started.Secondly, since the excerpt of the source text involves different fields closely related to public life, the interests in reading of the target audience will be aroused. The functional equivalence theory emphasizes on producing the closest natural equivalent. The effectiveness and validity of translation should be judged by the readers' responses.Based on Nida's functional equivalence theory, this thesis analyzes the linguistic and stylistic features such as frequent use of specialized terminology, complex and wordy sentence pattern, blurring of the human agents, omission of human agents. Also, the author discusses the features of target audience, community of authors and acceptability of the source text. And accordingly, the author summarizes the features and types of popular science readings, and puts forward translation strategies, methods and techniques from the perspective of lexical, syntactical and textual level, aiming to improve the receptors' reading experience and achieve the closest natural equivalent to the original text. The present thesis is helpful for people's in-depth understanding of the characteristics of popular science text, and can be used for future reference in terms of unifying of translation criteria in popular science readings translation.
