In 21 st century,the exchange of information in science and technology among countries over the globe is increasingly frequent.As a result,the advancement of science and technology has greatly promoted the development of human society.Therefore,translation of popular science text is of great significance.However,the study of popular science translation in China is immature for the moment.Thus,based on the translation of The Evolution of Everything: How New Ideas Emerge,the author discusses the translation strategy of popular science from the perspective of Eugene A.Nida's translation theory of functional equivalence,so as to improve the quality of popular science translation and promote the effective transmission and popularization of scientific information.The popular science text chosen by the present translator is The Evolution of Everything: How New Ideas Emerge,the latest masterpiece of Britain scholar Matt Ridley.From the perspective of evolution,this book analyzes the economic advancement,covering various domains,such as science,sociology,economics,politics,philosophy,network science as well as religion,which provide us a unique perspective on economic advancement in the historical process.Based on the translation theory of functional equivalence,this thesis conducts a case study on the present translator's translation,analyzing the linguistic features of the target language from lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence and textural equivalence respectively and discusses the difficulties encountered in the process of translation.Guided by functional equivalence translation theory,the present translator discusses translation strategies and skills applied in popular science translation and endeavor to convey the original meaning of source language to the Chinese readers completely and accurately.In this way,exchange of different information and communicative function of popular science would be realized.
