The music education program in the national higher normal university aims to cultivate music education talents with integrated development. Students of normal university, on one hand, should learn knowledge in all kinds of disciplines; on the other hand, they have to acquire learning skills and learn to think as they will become teachers. Piano-playing is one of the core course of the program, hence learners should not only be able to perform but also understand that to learn how to play is no less important than to play it well.The development of independent learning ability is referred as meta-cognition in learning strategy. Meta-cognition entails cognition of acquired knowledge or retrospection of existant thought. It consists of meta-c ognitive knowledge, meta-cognitive experiences and meta-cognitive supervision, which is to supervise and regulate subject cognition.Based on meta-cognition theory, the current paper discussed the function of meta-cognition in piano teaching of normal university from perspectives of teacher’s teaching of using meta-cognition and students’learning of using meta-cognitio n in piano-playing. The physical and mental features of normal university students and their motivation were explored, so were the teaching and learning process of the teachers and students.The sample were students from class2and class3of2010Music department in Hengyang Normal University. The aim was to explore whether meta-cognition theory could enhance teaching and learning and improve students’motivation and their grades. After a term-long experiment was executed, questionnaire and test were utilized to assess the efficiency.
