Krzysztof Penderecki (1933-), a Polish contemporary composer and conductor, is one of the most active, creative and influential musicians in latter half of20th century. The new sound he created has undergone a marked evolution to the avant-garde music in the20th century. However, from the middle age of70s in the20th century, Penderecki began to restructure his music, changing his real avant-garde style to reflect contemporary neo-Romanticism. This change has stunned the whole music world. Symphony No.5(1991~1992) is one of the most typical works after his composition style transition. This essay is divided into five chapters. Chapter1:The return of the traditional composition style in the20th century. Chapter2:The core tunes throughout the composition. Chapter3:The utilization of the core tunes in the counterpoint construction. Chapter4:Fugue with perfect combination of modern and traditional composition style. Chapter5:Dimensional and construction-supported Passacaglia. In this essay, the two age wave of the return of the traditional composition style was reviewed, and we tried to summarize the influence and leading role of Penderecki during the period of the second wave. During the study on Symphony No.5, we intended to perform a detailed analysis on the unique design of core tunes, as well as the ingenious union of traditional counterpoint and the modern composition techniques, thus we could be enabled to have a deep understanding on Krzysztof Penderecki about his unique charming linear-thinking, the ultrahigh art imagination, the exceeding music talent and the good construction balance ability. As the author’s concern, based on the study of Symphony No.5, the summary of counterpoint thinking, techniques and the new technical theory would provide a beneficial reference for the future music creation practice and music theory analysis in our country.
