On The Theory Of Intentionality Of John Searle

As one of the most influential contemporary philosopher of the United States of America, John Searle has great achievements both on the philosophy of language and the philosophy of mind. He has unique understandings which includes maintaining that the philosophy of language is the branch of the philosophy of mind and the intentionality is the point they meet in these two sphere. The theory of intentionality is so important of Searle’s philosophy that it runs throughout his whole system of philosophy thinking. The thinking effort that he did towards the intentionality not only specificated the usage of the concept of intentionality, but also solved many problem throughout the history of philosophy. This article is aiming to give an interpretation to the theory of intentionality of Searle, and to show my own opinion at the same time.The whole article is keen to process the research of the theory of intentionality in this clue that firstly introduces the traditional concept of intentionality and how Searle interpreted it in a naturalized way, and then discusses what is the background and regularity of intentionality, what can we learn from the comparison between illocutionary act and intentionality, then finally considers some questions on the varies subjects of intentionality.Here is the brief formation of this article below.In the first chapter, we mainly connects the intentionality with the philosophy of mind. We introduces the naturalized standpoint of Searle’s theory of intentionality and asks how could the intentionality be the basic function of human brain, then we talk about the relationship between mind and brain from the point of view of biological naturalism.In chapter two, we connect the intentionality with the philosophy of language. This chapter centers on the regularity and background of intentionality. There are two topics in the first part, which is aiming at the regularity of this chapter, one is discussing about the basic structure of intentionality, the other is to giving an analogy between the intentionality and the illocutionary act’s structure, then to find how could the intentionality to give the representation of the conditions of satisfaction like the way that the illocutionary act does. The second part of this chapter is about the background of intentionality. In this part we focus on its pre-intention and networked feature.The final chapter discusses the questions of two different subjects of intentionality. One of these is summarized as the question of collective intentionality. We will figure out how could it be possible and its relation with the social reality. Artificial Intelligence is the other subject we are going to research on. Should the AI have their own intentionality according to Searle’s regularity of it and what can we learn about the premise of these regularity? We can take these as the comprehensive usage of Searle’s theory of intentionality.
