Time is a representative of explanatory and portal news magazine in the UnitedStates, the reports of Japan on it construct a complete and objective Japan’s nationalimage. The descriptions of Japan’s national image have the objective and fair side,and also have the misreading of Japan because of the value orientation from the USA.In addition, Time records the news and influence the social reality at the same time.This article intends to shape the national image of Japan in the post-cold warera through "challenge the existing international order from Japan","soft power" and"other factors", and on this basis, analyses the objective and misunderstanding.The first part introduces Time and the concept of "national image". Depend onthe definition, summarize the Japan’s image on Time in the post-cold war era, andanalyze the interpretation right and shaping force.The second part describes the challenges Japan’s image shows to the existingworld order by three aspects:"political and military","economy" and"environmental protection and high-tech". Show the Japan’s action of developing itsstrength, challenging the existing international order.The third part bases on the perspective of soft power in Japan, analyzes theJapan’s image in the field of culture and sport and some kinds of ways of developingits soft power. Intends to show Japan pays more attention to build its soft power, andcultural values.In the fourth part, firstly introduces the atomic bomb, earthquakes and terroristattacks. Secondly introduces the Japanese business, fashion, famous people andsocial problems. Through the detailed description of all aspects of Japan’s societyshow the social panorama of Japan.The fifth part, on the basis of former parts, summarizes and analyzes factorswhich are affecting the reporting from two aspects of positive and negative to findout Time’s reports to Japan’s national image of the objectivity and misreading. Time,as America’s portal news magazine has timeliness and objectivity. It has a strong record function of current affairs of the United States and the world. But as a newsmagazine in the American system, it is inevitably influenced by the value orientation,political stance, which leads to some reports are from the perspective of the UnitedStates. It is also the limitations of Time.
