Drama translation research has been on the increase, while translation research on dramatic verses (or librettos) has failed to be given due attention. Based on the revised theory of intertextual translation proposed by Professor Luo Xuanmin, the thesis aims to probe into the translation strategies of dramatic verses in classical Chinese drama so as to provide a new perspective for drama translation studies, through a case study of the two English translations of The Peony Pavilion respectively by Cyril Birch and Wang Rongpei. The Author of the thesis, therefore, attempts to prove that the theory of intertextual translation, with re-contextualization as its essence, is of great significance in guiding the transmission of musicality and images of dramatic verses.
