As the specialization of English language teaching, the study on the languageteaching is also specialized. Besides the traditional study on listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar, vocabulary learning and teaching, which has longbeen neglected in China, draws almost the same attention of scholars. ChineseEnglish-language teachers not only learn from the experience of their own andother English teachers in China, but also draw on the experience of theirEnglish-speaking counterparts. This is a translation report for Chapter4and Chapter12of Working withWords: A guide to teaching and learning vocabulary by Ruth Gairns and StuartRedman. Chapter4, entitled Decisions about content, is more theoretical whileChapter12, entitled Vocabulary in course books, is more empirical. The reportitself consists of four chapters:1) Project Components, consisting of thebackground of the project, objectives of the project, significance of the project andlayout of the report.2) Introduction to the background of the source text, includingthe contents of the source text, the features of the language, the introduction to theauthors.3) Translation Difficulties and Methodologies, consisting of translationdifficulties, translation preparations, translation methodologies, and the examplesthat can explain the translation methods used in the process of translation.4)Conclusion, including the experiences from the project, lessons from the projectsand the problems for further study.Under the guidance of the translation theory “functional equivalence”, thetranslator used some translation skills in translating part of the book, such asconversion of part of speech and sentence mood, addition and deletion. Hopefully, the translation project could cast some light on English vocabulary teaching andthe translation of similar text.
