Research On Terminology And Proper Noun Of Li Madou’s Chinese Writing And Translation

Known as the “First One to Eastward the Western Sciences”, Li Madou playsan important role in the history of the cultural exchange between China and thewestern world. In order to coordinate with the preach, he translated many bookswith many Chinese literati and officialdom, and due to the fact that he was the firstto translate the western scientific works into Chinese, these works are creative,some of which have influential terminologies to be used till now. And they play anextremely important role in the Chinese lexicons, but there are few relatedresearches, which is exactly the problem.The object of study in this paper is on the terminologies and proper nouns inLi’s writing and translation works. It enlarges its scope compared with its focus onthe new words, which is good for the exploration of the comprehensive regularity.This paper combines statistics and analysis, description and explanation,synchronic and diachronic method before exploring from the aspects ofwesternized words, loanwords and free translation words. It puts into considerationthe previous studies and concludes the reason why these terminologies and propernouns spread so far, and the influence and contribution they have.
