As translation becomes more and more important in human activities, somescholars even suggest it is necessary to develop ‘translation studies’ as a discipline. Thus, scientific and systemic translation studies are of emergency in developingtranslation studies as an independent discipline. Holding consentient idea, the thesischooses the newly born translation theory Pragmatic Markedness EquivalencePrinciple (PMEP) which also conceives consentaneous idea to launch its research.PMEP is a theoretical system proposed by Hou Guojin which uses pragmaticsas an approach to translation studies. It is an interdisciplinary achievement showinghow Linguistics, specifically, pragmatics contributes to other subjects. Yet, previousstudies of PMEP paid more attention to the translation of sentences, paragraphs andeven texts. Translations of proper nouns are no doubt a vacancy to PMEP.Discussion of proper nouns translation realizes weak points of PMEP as well asconcludes its merits. PMEP, making Translatology more scientific and specific inconcrete studies, also brings dangers to translations. Twelve axioms indeedconcentrate on Source Text/Translated Text (ST/TT) in very detail. Thus, it is of highefficiency if being used as translation evaluation. Yet, it would become somewhathard to operate if being used as direction to translation.Accordingly, the thesis recomposes axioms of PMEP by proposing threekeynotes:‘Context Acquaintance, Meaning Analysis and Lingual Facets Care’,among which ‘Meaning Analysis’ is the core of the recomposition. Twelve axioms ofPMEP are divided into the three keynotes: Axiom1and12for Context Acquaintance,Axiom2,9,10and11for Meaning Analysis, and the rest (Axiom3-8) for LingualFacets Care. The recomposition tries to broaden functions of PMEP, improvingserviceability and operability of the principle. Based on the recomposition, the thesisasserts that PMEP is not just a translation evaluation. It is also guidance totranslating work. Since PMEP bends itself to building new subject—Pragmatranslatology, it isbeneficial to testify its serviceability and operability in variant fields. In all, the studytries to make a progress based on PMEP, hoping to take a further step up in buildingup Pragmatranslatology.
