Idiom is considered as a language treasure house in both Chinese andVietnamese. Idiom is a unique language element which has been refined by peoplefrom their use of language during a long period of time, thus containing profoundcultural implications and national characteristics. Human body is the most direct partto perceive during a conversation, so people tend to focus on themselves whileexpressing thoughts and feelings. As “Mouth” is the body part used most frequently,its various movements and shapes can reflect one’s inner life, psychological state andway of thinking.Based on our study and statistics regarding to different Chinese andVietnamese dictionaries,313Chinese and92Vietnamese idioms with the word“mouth” or “Mi ng, m m, kh u”(Vietnamese) have been found, which are studiedas the subject in our thesis.We conducted a comparative research on cultural implications between Chineseand Vietnamese Idioms with the word ‘mouth’. It shows that Chinese and Vietnameseare two nations with their own unique cultural characteristics, language associationand way of thinking. The thesis is helpful and meaningful when Chinese orVietnamese students are studying or researching idioms in each other’s language,with barriers reduced as to the communications between the two cultures.This thesis consists of five chapters:Chapter One is the introduction which briefs the aim and meaning of the study,current situation of former researches as well as their flaws, conceptual frameworkand methods, and definitions of idioms and the word “mouth” in Chinese andVietnamese.Chapter Two, we count the numbers of idioms with the word “mouth” inChinese and Vietnamese dictionaries and then categorize them. We also try to showthe differences and similarities between these two countries’ cultural implications inlanguage by looking for the difference of word collocations in idioms containing theword ‘mouth in both languages. In Chapter Three we try to find the respective metaphoric characteristics in bothlanguages by making comparative research on cognitive characteristics of the word‘mouth’ in metaphor in Chinese and Vietnamese idioms.In Chapter Four we try to explain the reasons in cultural implications fordifferences between idioms containing the word ‘mouth’ in the two languages fromfour aspects including word association, context meaning, source of idioms, culturalpsychology of nations).Chapter Five is the conclusion which summarizes the comparative research oncultural implications of idioms containing the word ‘mouth’ in both Chinese andVietnamese. Also, it brings up the research results and flaws.
