Christianity dominated European medieval art and culture, which inevitably endowed social ideology, mode of production and life, art practice then, etc, with a strong religious color. Medieval art and religion were inseparable, but in terms of art works themselves, a variety of art forms coexisted. Medieval art works had milepost sense in the world art history, which made tremendous contribution to art’s entering into the highest art palace. Art works in the medieval period can be classified into architecture art, painting art, sculpture art, etc. In the medieval period, the architectural arts of significant influence are respectively Byzantine architecture, Rome architecture, Gothic architecture; paintings can be classified into mosaics, murals, stained glass painting and tapestry painting, etc; sculpture art works can be divided into Rome and Gothic sculpture. In terms of description theme, medieval paintings revolved mainly around Christianity and Bible stories, also including portrayal of the Pope, bishops, monks and other religious figure; in terms of artistic techniques, medieval paintings got relatively close to a painting technique featured by abstraction, trying to express holy and stately religious emotions, the transcendence of real life,or artists’unease and fear, etc. Although many characters were not very realistic, the artists were still able to employ simple, simple characters to express their intense emotions in their inner hearts.Based on the search of lofty spirit from the medieval Christian art works, this thesis reflects on the art spirit connotation hidden in them. The noble spirit in contemporary painting works has met unprecedented challenges and dilemma. With the development of market economy, the social wealth is increasingly expanding, and people’s pursuit of material is improving, too. But the public desire for material and loss of spiritual pursuit are embodied in the whole society. Vulgar art, mediocre advertising media, etc, played a very important role in the society, resulting in the changes in people’s understanding of art and requirements. Some artists themselves are also influenced by his spirit, losing the pursuit of humanistic spirit, moral values and noble faith and only immersed in satisfaction with material interests. Based on this reality, the thesis discusses and emphasizes the necessity of noble spirit in the art creation. Artists should establish conscious, noble outlook on life in their artistic practice, which is the realistic significance of contemporary art creation.
