Ding Xiang Wang (City-God) is one important god in Xinjiang folk faith. Thepaper historically illustrates the origin and development of Ding xiang wang in theXinjiang context by conducting comprehensive literature research, examining culturalrelics, and analyzing oral histories. As well, the historical establishment of DingXiang Wang temples and beliefs in Ding Xiang Wang among the local in Xinjiang areexamined, attempting to provide a solid image of Ding Xiang Wang.Apart from the belief of Ding Xiang Wang itself, this research examines theestablishment of temples, industrial management in townsmen associations, charity,literature and art, education, and social activities. Those aspects show the dynamicrelationship between Ding Xiang Wang and the Hunan people in Xinjiang.However, as time changes, the belief of Ding Xiang Wang has been weakening.Ding Xiang Wang has been recorded in local chronological literature and folklore,leaving precious historical legacy for the descendant. This paper also explores culturaladaptation and regional identity among the Hunan people in Xinjiang. |
