He Chang qun was a famous modern Chinese historian. He knew a lot of sinological frontier of Japan and Europe through heavy translation when he worked in Commercial Press of Compilation in his early life. Then he worked in Peking library and researched Ju Yan Han bamboos with Lao Gan, Xiang Da. His thesis, such as Supplement and Correction of Liu Sha Zhui Jian and study on Bongsudae were another masterpieces besides Liu Sha Zhui Jian. He also called for greater protection on Dun Huang Grottoes cultural heritage with Xiang Da, and wrote Dun Huang Buddhist art system, tried hard to open up the new areas of Dun Huang art research. After the outbreak of Anti-Japanese War, he moved to the south and became a professor in Zhe Jiang University, later he was appointed to be the dean of Department of History in National Central University where he devoted to study political and intellectual history of Han, Tang, Wei, and Jin. Meanwhile he was also involved in the study of Tang poetry, forming a historical perspective to criticize poetry and seeking history in poetry. After the founding of New China, he served as the curator in Nanking Library, deputy director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Library. His works included Ancient Western Regions Traffic and Fa xian in India Tour and feudal land ownerships between Han and Tang Dynasties.This paper consists of three chapters, thoroughly studies He Chang qun’s academic thoughts and his many achievements. The first chapter makes a brief summary of his life and academic contributions, and sketches out his academic exchanges. Based on He Chang qun’s northwest archaeological introduction, the second chapter discusses his pioneering research on Dun Huang art and his hard exploration of Ju Yan Han bamboos, ancient spreading of Buddhism, western transportation history, and points out his achievements and shortcomings. According to feudal land ownerships between Han and Tang Dynasties and the studies on Wei Jin Philosophical talks, the third chapter mianly analyses his achievements on Han, Tang history and Wei, Jin intellectual history, and summarizes his historical research features and methods.
