This thesis based on the adverbs in dialect of Yu she County,deals with its typical and more frequently used adverbs chosenfrom each of its six main categories which are degree adverbs,scope adverbs, modal adverbs, manner adverbs, time adverbs, andnegative adverbs, with the aim of creatively exploring thecharacteristics of dialect of Yu she County with regard to its syntax,semantics, and pragmatics. By demonstrating the grammaticaldiversity and semantic vividness of this dialect, more linguisticdata are to be unveiled, which improves the present knowledge andfurther benefits future research concerning, for example, dialectsof this family and comparative linguistic studies.Adverb is a typical part of speech in the dialect of Yu sheCounty in terms of its grammatical and semantic functions. Apartfrom the many adverbs that have the same or similar functions withthose in Mandarin regarding their grammar and semantics, thereare a lot more that are distinct due to its special regional features,pertaining to the difference of their sense, syntagmaticrelationships, and shades of meaning. Accordingly, the thesisconducted a comparative study with regard to adverbs of Mandarinand those of Yu she County based on their semantic andgrammatical usage. The introduction of this thesis firstly gives a short introductionto the dialect of Shanxi Province, the present study of adverbs inChinese dialects, the definition and classification of adverbs, theregional and historical condition of Yu she County, the features ofthe dialect of Yu she County including its phonetic system, as wellas the thesis’ research methods. The main body of the thesiscontains six parts, in which research is conducted based on theclassification of the dialect of Yu she County. At last, the thesisprovides a short conclusion regarding the present research.
