In the quality assessment of simultaneous interpreting, omission has alwaysbeen considered as errors resulting in loss or deletion of SI information. However, anincreasing number of scholars have noticed the “saying it all” strategy is not practicalin the field. The author of this paper, a graduating MTI student, after two years’ studyand practice of SI, argues that not all the omissions are unacceptable and they couldeven be an effective strategy in SI.Various interpreting scholars have carried out interpreting research fromdifferent angle, combining different subjects. What theory the author of this paperrefers to is Daniel Gile’s Effort Model of simultaneous interpreting, in which Gileclearly and briefly analyzes all the mental work during the whole process ofsimultaneous interpreting from the perspective of cognitive psychology. Therefore, histheory will help readers to understand the special thinking processing of SI. Byprobing into the Effort Model to a certain degree, the author tries to prove the reasonand inevitability of omission’s existence in SI. What’s more, through the analysis ofEffort Model, the author comes to the idea that the less production effort is consumed, the more effort will be saved for the other parts of the SI process and finally putforward a hypothesis that reasonable omissions are unnecessarily a major mistake butcan be and should be an effective processing strategy in SI.To further testify the authenticity of this hypothesis and to explore the main typesand influence of omissions in SI, the author carried out an experimental study amongEnglish majors in postgraduate school and MTI students from respective grades.Through analyzing the recorded voices of each experimental subject, the authorfurther proved the universality of omissions in SI and summed up the frequentlyadopted omission types and got to know the influence exerted by omissions on SIperformance. What’s more, via analyzing respective rendition of each experimentalgroup, it turned out that proper omissions would contribute to the fidelity of the keyinformation of an original speech so that the most important function of SI as a tool of communication is sure to be met. Therefore, proper omission can be and should becarefully dealt with and applied in MTI teaching and field practicing.
