Omission In Simultaneous Interpreting Under The Guidance Of Gile’s Effort Model

Omission happens constantly in simultaneous interpreting.Although some scholars have probed into the phenomenon of omission in SI,so far,there has been no consensus on whether omission is an error or an effective tactic in SI.In addition,few scholars have elaborated on reasoning why there is omission in SI.Therefore,this paper chooses omission in SI as its research object and attempts to conduct a detailed study in this aspect.The aim of this paper is to probe into omission occurred in SI,and give some suggestions on how to use omission properly based on the causes for omissions in the practice.The author selected "COVID-19 and AI:A Virtual Conference" held by Stanford as the research scene for this paper.This paper gives a brief introduction to the previous studies on omission,Gile’s Effort Model and analyzes the rationality of omission in SI on theoretical basis.Under the guidance of Gile’s Effort Model,the author further probes into omissions happened in the practice.Based on Gile’s Model,the author summarizes the types of omission and analyzes the motivations and causes behind them.Therefore,the emphasis of this paper is to get a holistic understanding of omission in SI and how to use omission appropriately.At the same time,this paper puts forward some suggestions on how to make proper use of omission in SI.
