The phenomenon of hybridity in translation has become a very hot topic in thefield of translation around the world in recent years. However, compared with theresearches in western countries, fewer systematical researches have been made byChinese scholars on this topic. What’s more, little attention has been paid to thehybridity in translation from the perspective of intertextuality. This thesis has examined the phenomenon of hybridity from the perspectiveof intertextuality with Six Chapters of a Floating Life translated by Lin Yutang. Richcultural characteristics can be found in literary works in which a great mount ofcultural information is contained. Translations should become the mirror of originalworks and its responsibility and aim is to completely transmit the information inoriginal works. This transmission needs to be achieved by some translation methods, which makes translation hybrid. In this thesis, hybridity in translation is studied from the perspective ofintertextuality, aiming to prove the phenomenon of hybridity in translation is not onlyproduced by domestication and foreignization but also influenced by intertextuality.Fu Sheng Liu Ji is written by Shen Fu in Qing Dynasty. In this famous autobiography, words and contents contain vivid Chinese culture. Influenced by life experience, LinYutang is skilled in expressing in English and knows much about western culture. Hisunique translation views are formed in his translation practices. As a native Chinesetranslator, he translates Fu Sheng Liu Ji standing on westerners’ points of view. In Lin’s translation, many translation methods are adopted, with which the informationin Fu Sheng Liu Ji is adequately transmitted. From the perspective of intertextuality, the phenomenon of hybridity in translation works appears because of theconsideration on western readers’ psychology in reading and the readability oftranslation works. So these translation methods are adopted. The author has further discussed the strategies and the criteria of hybridity afterthe analysis on Six Chapters of a Floating Life translated by Lin Yutang from theperspective of intertextuality in the aspects of domestication, foreignization andreproducing. And in the following, the criteria of hybridity are discussed in theaspects of native translation, equivalent translation and style translation. By means ofanalysis and discussion, the author finds that, from the perspective of intertextuality, hybidity in translation needs to be paid more attention by translators. Hybridity intranslation is not free domestication, foreignization nor free creation. It should followsome certain criteria and should be used with some strategies so that translation worksare more readable and the cultural communication can be realized to the fullest extent.
