This report is written on the basis of the author’s translation practice ofThe Chinese Potter: A Practical History of Chinese Ceramics which is written byMargaret Medley from the perspective of archeology. The author’s translation is ChapterEight and part of Chapter Nine included in the third part of the book, which gives an accountof the development of ceramics in Ming dynasty.This report can be divided into five parts. The first part is a brief introduction of thetranslation project,including the pre-translation process, the translation process as well as themain difficulties which the author has encountered in the translation. The second part consistsof the introduction of the writer and the analysis of The Chinese Potter: A Practical Historyof the Chinese Ceramics. The third part gives a brief review of Eugene A. Nida’s theory offunctional equivalence and analyzes the reasons of its application to the translation task. Thefourth part discusses the appliance of the different levels of functional equivalence, andanalyzes the theory deeply from three aspects with the practical examples in the translation.At the lexical level, the author explains the transformation of the lexical gender, and thetranslation of terminology and the culture-loaded expressions; at the syntactic level, theauthor sums up some strategies on the adjustment of the words order and the transformationfrom passive voice to active voice; at the stylistic level, the report analyzes the translationpractice from the perspective of four-word idioms. The last part is the conclusion of thewhole translation process and this report.
