The functional equivalence theory is the core of the famoustranslation theorist Eugene A. Nida’s theories which requires to reproducein the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the sourcelanguage message, first in terms of meaning and second in terms of style.Meanwhile this theory allows certain freedom and flexibility to theinterpreters in that adjustment is needed to achieve functional equivalence. In addition, the application of the functional equivalence is studied onlexical level, the syntactic level and so on. The functional equivalencetheory is still of great value in terms of its practical contributions. Thisthesis tries to study and discuss the value of the functional equivalence inguiding translation practice. This thesis taking the author’s practicaltranslation of Mr. Li Ao’s speech at Beijing University as a case study, discussing the value of the theory from the aspects of lexical level, syntactic level and finally draw the conclusion that the functionalequivalence theory is a feasible translation criterion to guide the practice oftranslation.
