In the modern era, with an increasingly important role China has been playing on theinternational stage, a large number of foreign literary works which involve Chinese history,culture and national situation have sprung up. United States diplomat Henry AlfredKissinger’s latest book, On China, is such a kind of book which is based on his memoirs,summarizing his understanding of Chinese politics, culture and history, as well as Chineseleaders’ strategic intentions and diplomatic approaches. When being translated into Chinese,these kind of literary works naturally have close relationship with back-translation andcultural reconstruction. Back-translation refers to a process in which a text which has beentranslated into a given language is retranslated into source language. According toback-translation theories, this report attempts to analyze cultural reconstruction problems inPrologue and Chapter One of On China.This translation project report is divided into five parts. The main idea of the source text,the structure and significance of this report are analyzed in Chapter One.Due to the fact thatthe definitions of back-translation are widely divided at home and abroad, in Chapter Two,the author organizes and adopts the mainstream definitions of authorities and also introducesthe background and significance of back-translation. Chapter Three introduces Henry AlfredKissinger and On China. In Chapter Four, the author divides cultural elements of source textinto three parts: proper nouns, Chinese classics and Chinese policies, and respectively recordsthe process, problems and solutions of back-translation in detail. Chapter Five representsmain findings, remaining problems, limitations and suggestions for further research.Through practice and summary, the author expects to summarize problems and solutionsin back-translation, providing reference for improving back-translation on culturalreconstruction.
