| Umberto Eco (1932-), is renowned, not only because he is the writer of best selling novels and the authority of semiotics, but. in the meantime, he is also the famous public intellectual in Europe. His creation has its deep root within his profound knowledge, and various literary experiments are boldly carried out in his novel creations. Including "intertextuality" the most obvious characteristics of his literature creation.The Name of the Rose this encyclopedic detective novel, is Eco’s most representative work, by using a variety of the novel technique, intertextuality.this work gives us a clear view about the intertextuality between text links, embodies Eco’s theory of intertextuality, and, in the meantime, has many roots of intertextuality within Eco’s other literatures.This paper, using the theory of aesthetics, semiotics, intertextuality comprehensively and methods like comparative literature, empirical analysis and close reading, begins its research from the intertextuality analysis of The Name of the Rose, discusses specifically about the intertextuality theory,and the connection between intertextuality used in Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose,and other intertextuality use which could be found within the Eco’s other novel and other writers’ literature. So as to reveal the feature of Eco’s intertextuality in the creation of the novel The Name of the Rose, and the real charm intertextuality which could be found within.The first part of this paper combs the formation and development of the theory of intertextuality, and analyzes eco’ changes towards intertextuality, from potential acceptance to conscious expression,and combines with Eco’s own intertextuality theory in order to reveal the uniqueness of his creation; the second part uses the method of close reading to study the intertextuality of The Name of the Rose, and,at the same time, combines Eco’s other literature so as to discover intertextuality between them:the third part analyzes the intertextuality connection of literary work written by Umberto Eco, Borges,and Calvino,and compares The Name of the Rose with Bible on intertextuality.The innovative part of this article is,first, it summarizes Eco’s theory of intertextuality according to Eco’s work and other theoretical analysis; second,it analyzes the feature of intertextuality found within The Name of the Rose; third, it discovers the connections between the The Name of the Rose and Umberto Eco and other writers’ works on intertextuality, in order to reveal the feature of and charm of its unique intertextuality use. and to broaden past research scope of Umberto Eco work.and finally, expend new field towards the art of criticism of his work. |
