"Overinterpretation" In The "Interpretation" Of Umberto Eco's Textual World

Umberto Eco(1932-2016),an encyclopaedic scholar-type writer in Italy,first put forward "overinterpretation" in the "Tanner Lectures",aiming to point out the danger of "overinterpretation" and try to limit interpretation to a reasonable range.Eco's academic theories are complementary to his novels.His hermeneutics theories guide and standardize the writing of novels,while novels are the practice and enrichment of his theories.The paper centers on The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum,and adopts the way of close reading,to study "overinterpretation" in Eco's textual world.It explores and presents the relationship between interpretation and"overinterpretation",and the meaning of "overinterpretation" proposed by Eco.Based on research status of Eco's hermeneutics and related problems,this paper explains the necessity of interpretation within western interpreting traditions and times requirements,and points out that "overinterpretation" will lead to the danger of text meaning falling into nihilism.At the same time,it expounds the relationship between Eco's semiotics and hermeneutics.To better understand "overinterpretation"proposed by Eco,the paper takes a close reading of The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum to analyze "overinterpretation" from the perspective of mysterious religion and scientific rationality,and summarizes the significance and value of "overinterpretation" proposed by Eco.
