Syntactic Linearity In SI And Its Application

In the context of globally accelerated economic integration and cultural pluralism, thepolitical, economic and cultural exchanges among countries tend to be increasinglyfrequent and various international conferences also gain a rising momentum, all of whichhave accelerated the necessity of simultaneous interpretation (SI). Nowadays, the case istrue that multilingual national conferences have developed by a substantial increase.Sometimes, at a large-scale conference, more than seven or eight languages are involved.Statistics show that SI has been widely adopted at approximate90%of internationalconferences, indicating that SI, doubtlessly, has become the main form of interpretation atinternational conferences, strengthening the exchanges among countries. Therefore, SI hasalready played an indispensable role in contributing to the societal development.Associated with the accelerated pace of globalization, SI will continue to gather speed and,meanwhile, make even greater contributions in many realms.As a form of interpretation, SI is a supremely complex language communicationactivity, which requires interpreters to orally communicate the source language speakers’thoughts and feelings conveyed in their words to the target language audiences almost atthe same speed. While doing interpretation, the source language continuously flows to theinterpreters who have to highly concentrate themselves to follow the speakers, only in thisway, can the SI be achieved. In this sense, SI differs from written translation, in which thetranslators can have sufficient time to understand the original texts as a whole. What’smore, they can frequently consult reference books even Internet resources. It is alsodifferent from consecutive interpretation (CI), for when doing CI, the interpreters candeliver their version only after the speakers have given several sentences or a short passage,during which the interpreters can take note of the key information for remindingthemselves when doing interpretation, which enables the interpreters to restructure theoriginal sentences to make it more fluent, accurate and elegant. However, simultaneity ofSI and the linguistic differences in such aspects as sentence order, expressing habits and others request the SI interpreters to follow the original syntactic order while interpreting asmuch as possible, namely, SI requires the interpreters to apply SL principle when doinginterpretation to alleviate their burden of memory, so that they can have energy to deal withthe impending information bombarded on them to ensure the consistency and accuracy oftheir output in target language.This project mainly falls into the genre of verifying one, whose tenor is to furtherverify the feasibility and pragmatical value of SL in SI for the purpose of providing therelevant practitioners and learners with the use for reference. In the meantime, the authorof this project aims at generating further research enthusiasm for the development of SI ina long run.
