In the era of globalization, academic exchanges between different countries havebecome quite frequent. The translation of academic texts helps disseminate the researchachievements and facilitate further exchanges. Thus, it is of crucial importance. In thisthesis, the translation of Encyclopedia of Language and Education is probed into. Thisbook series vividly describes the current development in various fields of language andeducation. From a global perspective, this book series make a breakthrough in researchdepth and covers a wide range of knowledge from other disciplines.The author of this thesis has first translated some chapters from Encyclopedia ofLanguage and Education. Guided by Text Typology, the author then attempts to elucidatesome principles and appropriate strategies. The German scholar Reiss divides texts intothree types: the content-focused text, the form focused text and the appeal-focused text.Each type has its own dominating function. The author thinks that content should first ofall be given full consideration in academic texts. Focus should then be put on form andappeal effect.Under the guidance of Reiss’s Text Typology, the author analyzes the translation fromlexical, syntactical and text style level and proposes the following three principles:First,academic words need explanation as well as translation. Second, long sentence translationshould be logic-focused. Third, translation should conform to academic style of the text.It is the author’s hope that this thesis can be of certain value to the translation ofacademic texts.
