This report is based on English-Chinese translation of the Introduction and Part 1 of Translation as Communication across Languages and Cultures written by Juliane House,a German researcher in translation study. The Part 1 of the book provides a overview of translation study and introduces lots of translation approaches, new trends in translation and the relation between culture and translation. The book with rich content and new perspectives is significant for the translation study in China. The application and guidance of Peter Newmark's text typology theory in the process of English-Chinese translation of the Introduction and Part 1 of the book have been discussed in this report.Since the source text is an academic text, words are advanced and accurate and the structures of sentences are various including many compound sentences, which increase the difficulty of the understanding of source text and the expression of target text.Under the guidance of text typology theory, translator analyzes the text types of some typical cases selected from the source text and explains the reason why methods are used in translation from lexical aspect and syntactic aspect. In order to convey the content of source text with idiomatic expression of target language, semantic and communicative methods are adopted by translator with lots of translation techniques such as amplification and omission after text types of the source text are determined.Through the practice,a conclusion can be drawn that Newmark's text typology theory is of significance for translating academic texts.Under the guidance of text typology theory, the difficulties of the academic translation have been solved including the translation of technical terms, abstract nouns and complicated sentences.Figure 0;Table 2;Reference 29...
