Since the1980’s, the great vitality and charm of American Western novels have been engraved in the memory of Chinese readers. Out of keen interest in American Western novels, the present author translated Dutch Uncle, a contemporary Western by Marilyn Durham. In the thesis she will discuss her working experience and afterthoughts. In her work, the present author alternately applies strategies based on semantic translation and communicative translation, two approaches theorized by Peter Newmark. Wherever the significance and structure of the source text is to be explicitly disclosed, she applies methods of semantic translation, aiming to reproduce the spirit of the original work to the maximum extent; meanwhile, wherever the contextual meaning of the original might be readily comprehensible to the reader, she attempts ways of communicative translation. In her opinion, the two strategies should be applied alternately in literary translation to achieve the ideal effect of a dynamic equivalence by reproducing aesthetic features of the original work.
