This English-Chinese translation project consists of two parts.The first part is the critical commentary and the second part includes the selected text and its Chinese translation.The source text is excerpted from the book West of the Border:The Multicultural Literature of the Western American Frontiers,by Noreen Groover Lape,an assistant professor of language and literature at Columbia State University in Columbus.The selected part is Chapter "Bartered Brides and Compulsory Bachelors on the Chinese American Frontier".It depicts that early Chinese immigration triggered panic in the United States,and the US government used immigration laws and various means to curb the growth of Chinese population,including buying and selling brides,prohibiting family formation and restricting immigration.According to Peter Newmark's textual function theory,the source text is classified into informative text.The source text reveals the historical facts and includes many terms of laws and politics and academic words.Thus,in order to make the translation accurate,the translator chose Peter Newmark's semantic translation theory and communicative translation theory as guidance.Besides,some translation skills are also applied in the project,such as linear translation,division and reinvention,amplification,conversion,turning passive voice into active voice.The project will be of great significance in two aspects.Firstly,it is hoped that this project will help readers learn better about the racial issues,such as the situation of Asian immigrants during the Westward Movement and the US government's policy toward Asian immigration,and the issue of multicultural conflicts on the borderland.Secondly,the effectiveness and value of involved theory and skills are well shown in the project.
