Development of Chinese paintings in the1980’s has always been doubted: whether the self-changing by tradition or the influence of the Western paintings. How to make Chinese paintings timely? Which have always been concentrated by contemporary artists, will puzzle them in a long time. So far, many artists have explored these questions by integrating their thoughts to their paintings with Li Xiaoxuan whom have been successful in it include. In the early1990’s, Li Xiaoxuan have sprung up in painting, he uses traditional methodology to express the human in modern cities.As his paintings are of strong spatial tension and fulfill of complex emotional content, he draws the attention of the art world. With special life experiences, sensitive temperament, and through unremitting efforts, he works out a number of paintings known as the series of "urban nightmare" which focused on theme of the city. In this article, taken the series of "urban nightmare" as an example the phases of realistic human modeling and realistic scene flame modeling to the phase of indeed soul are analyzed to explorer the artistic characteristics and significance of Li’s paintings.
