From Traditional To Modern

Mr. Zhou Shoujuan is a representative writer belongs to Saturday School in the preliminary times of Republic of China, who is a translator, writer and editor as well as a horticulturist. Inevitably there mingles with elements traditionally and modernly in his novels due to that he is a transitional figure combined with tradition and modernity, succeeded in integrating Chinese and Western essentials.This dissertation has taken such research methods like deduction, example, comparativeness, content analysis to make a meticulous analysis combined with those concrete writings with the attempt of exploring the character of modernity embeded in the theme and writing styles which will display the characteristic modern awareness and character hidden in his novels, and which will show profound and significant meanings of another norm of modernity in recognizing the light literature.This dissertation has been divided into five parts, the part of forward has introduced the status quo of research about the novels written by Mr. Zhou Shoujuan in the country as well as the meaning of selecting the title of this dissertation. The first Chapter mainly introduces the early life experiences of Mr. Zhou Shoujuan including the poverty-stricken life in the childhood, sad and lost love in the manhood as well as the early activities of translation, with the attempt of discovering the clue in these unique life courses which impact his literary creation. The second Chapter of this dissertation analyzing the modernity of titles concerning Mr. Zhou’s novels which displays that how could the women earn their rights step by step with the cry of freedom, democracy and equality centered with romance, marriage and family from one perspective as well as Mr. Zhou has expressed the emotion of era and sentimental resorts of the suffering populace in which he has acting for in his creating practices which unexpectedly produces the citizen’s space which is different from the traditional awareness of family and state; at the same time the romance tragedies with the trait of making tears and mucus flowing down rapidly which has been described by Mr. Zhou has opened a door of expressing the sentiment of modern tragedies, all of which discloses the modern character of making progress with the times gained in Mr. Zhou as light novelist. The third Chapter mainly analyzes the modernity of literary form of Mr. Zhou’s novels which makes some revisions about the traditional Chinese literature by imitating the art technique of western literatures under the impact of western wave such as advocating the colloquial Chinese and the experiment of short novels, and which also makes some innovations in the modes of narrations like the perspectives, time and structures, all of which make his novels different from other traditional novels with novelty.
