Sun Li was born in a small village of northern china. The honesty and tolerance of people in northern land not only receive Sun Li but also influence him much more. After the War ended in1949, Sun Li left his hometown for the city, however, his concern and reminiscence for homeland was never weakened, on the contrary, was gradually strengthened. In spite of living in the city, where his soul couldn’t be settled at all, that small village was always the habitat of Sun Li’s soul. Writers’literary creation is generally the outward manifestation of their hidden spiritual world. After going into town, Sun Li still focused on those rural memories to create works. Such creation intention was indeed related to his love for hometown, but much more lied in that he could hardly adjust to his present life. This paper, based on a close reading of the text, while analyzing and exploring the spiritual developments of Sun Li, quests for the reasons which lead to his literary creation trends, so as to get a better understanding of Sun Li.Chapter One, Lost and stickiness (sub-divided into three chapters): the first spiritual return of Sun Li (1949-1956), mainly analyzes the disappointment and loneliness of Sun Li after the disillusionment of his revolutionary ideals and that he has to construct his own spiritual village in order to relieve the loneliness at that time. Chapter Two, Adjustment and quest (sub-divided into three chapters):the second spiritual return of Sun Li (1976-1987), with the clue of "ten years tortured in disease and ten years wasting in encounters", elaborates the reasons and manifestation of his second spiritual return. Chapter Three, Disillusionment and escape (sub-divided into two chapters):the third spiritual return of Sun Li (1987~1995), discusses the impact of the advent of commercial economy on Sun Li’s traditional values, which reflects that he is immersed in his countryside memories and just could not get through.
