In1898, the novel 《The Lady of the Camellias》 translatede by LIN Shu has been very popular in China. From then on, the translation of French literature began in China. On the other hand, during the late Qing Dynasty, under the combined pressure of the invasion from European powers and the feudal emperor’s decadent govern, national salvation et enlightenment has become the primary task of the entire social. Political reformers ans revolutionaries realize that the rapid rise of Japan depends a lot en the translation. So they were convinced to translate foreign literature so as to save the country. However, with the utilitarian purpose of "salvation and enligntenment", plus the shortage of foreign language talents, the literary translation of late Qing Dynasty holded out a disorderly situation and translators translated as their own will. There were non universal norms. Most of translations are ethnocentric. Translation was just a tool.During the period of the May Fourth Movement, Westerns countries were busy with de First World War, so they had not enough energy to invade China. So the task of saving the country has been relieved, and the utilitarian purpose of translators has weakened. Besides, more and more translators with a foreign study background came out. They had a high level of foreign language, and they were much more open-minded. They have recognized th magnificence of foreign literature and have realized the decadence of the old chinises literature et language. As a result, the translation of the period of time was totally different from the ethnocentric translation of late Qing; translators advocated a loyal translation so as to create and develop the new Chinese literature and de new Chinese language. Translation of this period is more systematic with a larger scale. What’s more, the norms of translation have been formed and diffused. Translators’acts were strictly bound by the ethics of tranlations.In this thesis, we reclassify the translations of late Qing Dynasty and of the period fu May Forth Movement. We try to investigate the literary translations of these forty years with an ethics approach——especially meta-ethics approach.From the point of view of meta-ethics, after the comparison the translations of late Qing and of the period of May Forth, we will find that the translations of the first period are more attached to his instrumental value, while the translations of the second period are more attached to his intrinsic value.During the investigation, especially for the late Qing Dynasty, we borrow some basic concepts of meta-ethics, with which we distinguish 《whether a translated work is good》 from 《whether the act of a translator is moral》. The former belongs to the category of values; the latter belongs to the category of morality. They are totally two different things.Concerning the evaluation of the translators’morality, we set the ethical aim proposed by the French translations theorist Antoine Berman as the guideline. But we would not like to focus on whether a translation act is moral or not, we prefer to ask ourselves how close is it to the final ethical aim. In this way, we hope to contribute a little thing to the development of translation ethics in China.
