This report is based on the author’s translation practice of Amy Foster, amasterpiece of Joseph Conrad. Conrad is a pioneer in the description of lonely heroesand established his own system of tragedy in20thcentury. Very often his heroes arefrom the outside world and feel out of place in the English world, especially in thecultural dimension. They tend to have a lonely personality and the end of their life ismore often than not very sad. With the theme of “conflict and acceptance in culture”,this story is one of Conrad’s classic short stories, and it enjoys high literary value.Translation of the novel has not yet been published. From the perspective ofNewmark’s communicative translation theory, this report hopes to analyze translationskills and translation principles in three aspects: lexicon, syntactic structure andstylistic feature. This report is divided into six parts: part one is the brief introduction of topic’sbackground and significance; Chapter1presents the description of translation taskincluding analyzing the source text and the structure of the report; Chapter2introduces the theoretical framework; Chapter3is the analysis of some translationsstrategies with abundant examples from the perspective of communicative approach;Chapter4is a retrospection of problems and deficiencies of this translation practice; The last one is the conclusion.By doing this translation work, the writer hopes the analysis and summary of thetranslation practice will provide a reference for the study of literature translation, andhelps to attract more Chinese readers.
