The 21st century is an era of knowledge economy. The development of society requires a new generation with the capacity of life-long learning. And developing autonomic learning ability is one of the important ways to improve students’capacity of lifelong learning. The development of students’autonomic learning ability is both the main task of current education and a critical and urgent research topic nowadays.With college calisthenics teaching as the breakthrough point, this study introduces auto-instruction to colleges physical teaching in order to explore effective ways to foster students’autonomic learning ability of sports. First of all, The means of literature, questionnaire and statistics are used in the study to theoretically demonstrate that the the evaluation index of autonomic learning ability in physical education consists of the physical indicators, motor skills, knowledge, technology indicators, learning methods and strategies indicators and indicators of the autonomy in the learning process. The feasibility of the design of calisthenics auto-instruction is also theoretically demonstrated. And teaching experiment is carried out according to the instructional design.Relevant data is obtained through the experiment and the following conclusion is drawn in the comparison of auto-instruction and traditional teaching by analyzing the relevant data.1) Both auto-instruction and traditional teaching can improve the fitness level of students with no significant distinction between them; 2) Both auto-instruction and traditional teaching can improve the students’technology of movement knowledge, skill level, and there is no significant difference between them; 3)The former can promote students’mastery of learning methods better, with significant distinction between them.4) The former has obvious advantage in improving the seven aspects (namely stimulating learning motivation, selection of learning content, planning and managing learning time, choosing learning mehtods, monitoring learning process, evaluation of learning outcomes, creating learning environment) of students’autonomy in the learning process. The distinction between the two is quite apparent. Therefore it’s easy to draw the conclusion that calisthenics auto-instruction is good to the cultivation of autonomic learning ability of students and should be frenquently adopted in the future teaching.
