In this research, NBR/EPDM/OMMT nanocomposites were prepared by mechanical blending and the microstructures of nanocomposites were studied by TEM. The cure characteristics, mechanical properties, low temperature resistance properties, thermal stability properties and oil resistance properties were also investigated. Then using SEM, DMA and TEM studied the OMMT compatibilization effect in NBR/EPDM nanocomposites. The main contents are summarized as follows:1. Four kinds of NBR/EPDM/OMMT (NBR/EPDM=70/30) nanocomposites were prepared by mechanical blending. By studying overall performance of several NBR/EPDM/OMMT composites, the optimal OMMT was chosen. TEM observation confirmed the preparation of exfoliation NBR/EPDM/OMMT nanocomposites. The impact of OMMT contents were investigated on the composites properties by comparative analyzed the cure characteristics, tensile behavior, mechanical properties, and the aging resistance properties to determine the best contents of OMMT. The results showed the tensile strength and the tear strength of NBR/EPDM/OMMT nanocomposites increased with the addition of OMMT and much higher than that of the pure NBR/EPDM composites, they were improved by22.8%and25.0%with only5.0phr of OMMT.2. Combining the above research results, analyzed the compatibility of NBR/EPDM blends modified by OMMT using SEM, TEM, DMA and other methods. The SEM result indicated that, compared with the pure NBR/EPDM composites the NBR and the EPDM combined better, the micro area size is smaller after mixed OMMT; TEM observation showed that OMMT bridged between the two-phase interface, which played a compatibilizing effect; DMA result displayed that after blended OMMT the DMA still had two clear glass transition temperatures, however the peak at-32℃moved to a higher temperature, and caused two Tg values nearness, indicated the compatibility of the Blends was improved because of the addition of OMMT.
