Latex paint plays a vital role and is widely used in both exterior wall and interior wall due to its environmental friendly sustainability and easy application and good water resistance. While because of its complicated paint system, color acceptance and delamination are always the big issue. In this paper, we started from the optimization of paint formulation. We tested the different wetting agents and dispersants to improve the performance of color acceptance and dig out the reason and mechanism. In the light of Stokes theorem, the reason why latex paint would be delaminated was analyzed and the factors influencing latex paint delamination were exploited, in terms of selection of wetting dispersant and assortment of rheology modifier.Study on the color acceptance of latex paints. Add5different wetting agents respectively with the same dosage into a widely used formulation of exterior paints. It turns out that∑△E of the Rx with EF-106as wetting agent is the smallest, which means that this formulation performs well for color acceptance. For these Rx coming out the worse result with agent CF-10and BD-405, formula modification has been taken. Through increasing the wetting agent dosage form1.5%o to4.5%o, a significant improvement on color acceptance can be achieved. At last stage, based on the formulation with CF-10(dose1.5%o), evaluating the effect of different dispersants, and the research shows that CA-200is the best one for a good color acceptance Rx.Study on the delamination characteristics of latex paints, and research of the performance4different types of thickener: HEC; ASE; HASE(TT-935); HEUR(RM-8W, RM2020NPR) and their combination. It is proved that the delamination issue is alleviated when HEC and ASE are used; the paint’s stability will be poor when HEUR(RM-8W&RM2020NPR) is used, but paint’s leveling is good. Paint delamination occurs when HEC and HEUR used together, because HEC is thickening to water, forming a hydrophilic system, while HEUR is thickening to latex and surfactant, forming a hydrophobic system. The different HLB between two systems leads to an unstable paint system. A combination formulation of the4different thickeners with proper ratio is recommended to get both good paint film and storing. A test group with HEC+ASE-60+TT-935+2020NPR obtains the best result. A case study is given based on the conclusion of the research, a separation problem is resolved for client and the formulation is used into production.
