The density of sailing ships is increasing rapidly on limited sailing routes with theincreasingly busy marine traffic developed. The collision of ships happens easily, whichleads to damage or sinking of the hull structure, cargo leakage, environmental pollution anddisastrous consequences of casualties. So it has important significance to make collisionresearch and to improve the crashworthiness of ships, either from the security, economic, orfrom the environmental point of view.In this paper, the steel-polyurethane crashworthiness characteristics of compositestructure was studied and analyzed based on collision theory, experiment, numericalsimulation and energy absorption. The structure size parameters’ effect on crashworthinessof composite structure was analyzed based on nonlinear finite element structural analysissoftware. The composite structure was applied to single layer side structure and thecrashworthiness performance was analyzed. The result was compared with the conventionalstructural crashworthiness analysis and a comprehensive assessment of the side structure ofthe composite performance was made. The main researches are listed below:(1) Introduces the basic properties of the polyurethane materials, structural features ofSteel polyurethane interlayer board. The Steel polyurethane interlayer board has excellentmechanical properties and other aspects performance, more and more widely used inengineering, existing precedent of application to ship structure. But not yet universal, needto do more research work.(2) Use test result and finite element numerical simulation to obtain the ideal modelingmethod. Comprehensive compared the crashworthiness of steel plate and sandwich plate.(3) Discussed influence on sandwich plate’s crashworthiness by finite elementnumerical simulation technology. Get the following conclusion: with main dimensions andthickness ratio decrease, the crashworthiness of sandwich plate becomes well. On the basis,designed two side structural concepts for replace original single port side.(4) By finite element numerical simulation,analyzed the mechanical behavior ofcomposite port side structure by in transverse impact load. From the contrast of damagedegree, maximum impact and absorbing energy, evaluated the composite port sidestructure’s crashworthiness by in transverse impact. Discussed the feasibility of compositelaminated plate apply to ship port side.
