With the development of urbanization and advances in computer technology of China, the existing drainage system could no longer meet the needs of urban development in many cities, and it had made much inconvenience to the people’s production and life. The application of GIS and dynamic simulation technology of drainage network to the reasonable management, design and reformation of drainage network controls the overflow of rain sewage and pollution well, and improves the city comprehensive function. It is already becoming the imperative mission of drainage field. The present problem to be solved of urban drainage system is how to apply GIS to mass data management efficiently, simulate the drainage network with the aid of drainage modeling software, analyze the simulation result, find the problem out, and prove the optimum reformation plan eventually.This paper focuses on the problems which easily appear in urban drainage network, comprehensively utilizes the ArcGIS and Info Works CS software, simulates and analyzes the network on the basis of collecting the drainage network data of Lanhuagou Area in Kunming. For drainage network modeling of Kunming and other cities has scientific evidence and reference.Firstly, the research status in domestic and overseas of drainage network modeling software and the applications of GIS in drainage network are introduced, and then the research aim and significance are concluded. Secondly, the basic theories of drainage network model, the mathematical simulation in the process of network dispersion, and the modern drainage network modeling software are introduced. Through above study, the key modeling technology of drainage network system model is described specifically. The key technologies include:establishing the integrated and uniform standards, checking and revising the topological structure, compartmentalization and match of the catchments, simulating and calibrating the models under different situation and parameter, accuracy analysis of models, evaluation of regional drainage environment which based on simulation results, analyzing the influencing factors thereby concluding the modification scheme. Finally, the urban drainage network system modeling technology and the models that applied to drainage engineering, which combine the actual research project of Lanhuagou Area in Kunming are discussed deeply.In this paper, the combined application of GIS and drainage modeling software is specifically analyzed. However the shortage or discontent of some data leads to the calibrating result unsatisfactory. It basically has depth while the velocity of flow does not match. Moreover, the time that during the testing process nearly reached the end of rainy season, so there is no great measured data of rainstorm. Therefore, more data is needed for calibrating to make the simulating result closer to the actual condition of drainage network.
