Along Street greenbelt is the closest part to the residential area in city external space, and is closely related to leisure activities of people. Street greenbelt is in small scale, directly influenced by the overall urban environment. The aim of this thesis is how to create appropriate microclimate of street greenbelt under the extreme climatic conditions of hot summer and cold winter area.At present, the studies of climate adaptability in China are mainly concentrated in urban large-scale level. The researches usually consider how to change the overall environment from the perspective of the whole city, and have made some achievement. However, the urban small-scale space (street greenbelt) is less studied as an object, especially the microclimate in the cities that have hot summers and cold winters. This realm is still lack of researches and design strategies.Therefore, this thesis studies the feasibility of climate adaptability of street greenbelt, based on the research of Nanjing (the typical city of hot summer and cold winter climate). And it discusses how to improve the microclimate of street greenbelt from the following elements: adjacent building interface, waters, greenery, paving, infrastructures and buildings. The thesis aims at the characteristics of climate in hot summer and cold winter area, proposes some corresponding design strategies:reduce the solar radiation, lower the temperature, reduce humidity and natural ventilation in summer;and increase solar radiation, increase the temperature, reduce the humidity and block the wind in winter. Furthermore, the thesis discusses harmonic problem between summer and winder design strategies.Lastly, a case study of street greenbelt design is conducted in the town of Lishui, Nanjing. After that the design strategies are summarized and applied into practice. It concludes the existing problems, and the outlook of following researches.
