To improve the performance and extend service of asphalt pavement and decrease the damage caused by all kinds of environmental change, researchers are world widely to produce high quality modified asphalt. Liquefaction residue modified asphalt can not only improve asphalt pavement performance, but also can achieve the waste re-use, further study on the Liquefaction residue modified asphalt is very important.Firstly, the basic properties of asphalt, residue of Shenhua coal direct liquefaction (SHLR) and residue of coal tar hydrogenation liquefaction (MJLR), were analyzed. Secondly, the modified asphalt was prepared under different conditions, such as modified time, modified temperature, quantity of liquefaction residue, and the way of adding liquefaction residue, etc. Discuss the influence of these conditions to modified asphalt properties; the optimum condition of modified asphalt preparation was obtained. Finally, the modified mechanism was analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.Through analysis, the main conclusions of this paper are as follows:(1) After four-component analysis, the oil content of MJLR was relatively high, the insolubles of tetrahydrofuran was very few, pyrolysis temperature low, which improve the average molecular weight of the residue is low. Through Fourier transform infrared spectra analysis, the spectrograms of these two residues were quite similar, which show the components of these two residues were similar, but the proportion of each component was different. Moreover, the softening point of coal tar hydrogenation liquefaction residue is relatively low, and so was the ash content, therefore, it has good compatibility with asphalt.(2) Through the experiment and analysis:in this study experimental conditions, the appropriate mixing temperature is about150℃,mixing time is about60min. Since the softening point of SHLR is higher than the preparation temperature of modified asphalt, the modified asphalt can be prepared through two different ways, molten state and directly adding. The performance of the modified asphalt which is prepared under molten state is better than directly adding.(3) MJLR has good compatibility with asphalt, which is suitable for preparation of modified quantity with high penetration and ductility requirements. Since the SHLR has high ash content, high average molecular weight, low compatibility with paving asphalt, obvious modification effect, when the step up quantity is5%, the standards of50#asphalt can be meeting. Therefore, it is suitable for minor change the properties of asphalt.(4) The mechanism of liquefaction residue modify paving asphalt is that the liquefaction residue swells after absorbing the soft component from paving asphalt, and forms an interface layer with the soft component. A transition layer is formed between interface layer and glial. Micells are absorbed by glial, and filled in the network structure of liquefaction residue, a three-dimensional network structure is formed. At the same time, the network nodes hinder the movement of micells in the modified asphalt, thus, the performance of asphalt is improved.
