Differing from B. chinense DC. and B. scorzonerifolium Wild, which are recorded by China Pharmacopoeia(2010edition). Bupleurum marginatum Wall, ex Dc. makes use of whole herb.But the quality criterion of it is far away from normalization.In this paper,we aimed to consummate the quality criterion of B. marginatum Wall. ex Dc.The main researches were included as follow:1.The morphological study.The histological features and macroscopical and microscopical characters are described in details for identification.2.Research on the method of TLC.The chromatography condition was founded to analysis the character and quality of B. marginatum Wall. ex Dc. for the first time.3.For the purpose of estimating the quality of the B. marginatum Wall. ex Dc., contents of water, ash. and the aqueous extracts were also determined.4. This chemical investigation was carried out for a better method to evaluate the quality of B. marginatum Wall, ex Dc..Active ingredients were found to be distributed in different parts of the plant by modern spectrometric analysis techniques such as HPLC. Saikosaponin a,d and four flavones(rutin,quercetin,kaempferol and isorhamnetin) were determined by HPLC.The results showed that B. marginatum Wall. ex Dc. contains many active components.5.Use the HPLC fingerprints to estimate the quality of B. marginatum Wall. ex Dc..In order to establish the HPLC fingerprints of it,common peaks were analyzed,and the similarity of each peak was calculated. The result showed that the method can be used for the quality control and identification of B. marginatum Wall. ex Dc.
