It is a difficult grammar point to grasp the “zai在” as both a verband a preposition in modern Chinese in teaching Chinese as the secondlanguage. This thesis fisrt try to find out the usage of “zai” in differentperiods from the diachronic approach aspect. We want sort out thegrammaticalization process of “zai” through the research and analysis ofthe usage development of “zai”, through the comparision between “zai”and “yu于”, through the position change of “zai” in different periods.And we also analysed the reasons and development power ofgrammaticalization of “zai” from the syntax and typology on speechorder.This thesis has also analysed the introduction component of “zai” as apreposition from the synchronic approach aspect, and has especiallyanalysed the position of “zai” as a preposition of location and relativeambiguous sentences. It takes the typical ambiguous sentences as theexamples which are discussed many times by the scholars and has typicalcomplicated kinds. We also discuss the looming of the “zai” as apreposition according to the research of Mai Ziyin.We analysed the error kinds of “zai” as a preposition,especially theuasing features of the error made by students with English as the motherlanguage according to research of the foreign students’ languagediscourse. We analysed the error kinds from the comparision betweenChinese and English, and discussed the taching containt and method fromteaching Chinese as the second language aspect.
