Zutangji which was written in 952 AD,is the earliest extant historical materials of dhyanasect It`sfirsthand corpus of Tangwudai Chinese.This article describe the prepositions,compound prepositionsand circumpositions in Zutangji on the basis of exhaustive investigation.According to the maingrammatical meanings of prepositions,they can be divided to 9 types.By making diachronic andsynchronic comparison separately, this article discovers the historical, regional and professionalcharacteristics of prepositions in Zutangji. This article also analyzes the co-occurrence restrictions ofprepositions and law of omission;the issue on the inversion of object and the syntactic distribution ofpreposition phrases.Zutangji `s Preposition system is a mixture of history and dialect. The characteristics ofprepositions in Zutangji.can be concluded as:1) The quantity of prepositions increased,the semantic relations they express become more andmore abundant.2) The grammaticalization of prepositions is a process.3) The co-occurrence restrictions of prepositions and law of omission is ripe.4) The usage of prepositions is confused.5) In the main, the principal syntactic distribution of preposition phrases is located before themain verb.6) The inversion and the omission of object of prepositions in Zutangji show the influence ofclassical Chinese language.
