The western missionaries in modern China played a very important role,especially in the relations between China and foreign countries, which is necessary tounderstand the relations between modern China and foreign counties, even themodern international relations. Due to various reasons, however, the particularity andtheir five hundred-years-long diplomatic role in modern China have not been givenenough attention to. Generally, missionaries are positioned in China as aggressionagent of modern imperialism, which can’t be agreed by this paper. At the same time,combining with 《Sino-Russian Treaty of Nipchu》and the participating of themissionaries, this paper further analyzes the positive role and the practicalsignificance of the missionaries in modern China, foreign counties and China’scontemporary diplomacy.This dissertation compromises five chapters, providing detailed analysis on theissue of missionaries’ role in 《Sino-Russian Treaty of Nipchu》.Chapter One deals with the concept of missionaries and its activities in China, andputs forward the problem of missionaries’ role in international relations; Chapter Twolists the international background of the treaty, including the national strength andforeign policy of both the Qing dynasty and Russia at the time,17th century Europepattern, missionaries’ international activities in the seventeenth century; ChapterThree explains the three interest gaming and activities among Russia、China andmissionaries before the treaty; Chapter Four mainly focuses on the preparation workby Russia and China for the treaty; Chapter Five mainly introduces the treaty process,especially the missionaries’ role in it.
