With more and more connection and communication between people in all fields, Chinese people have gradually noticed the distinguished language and culture of western countries. They start to read all kinds of books written in English so as to learn English and get to know some cultural differences. Thus, foreign novels are having a ready market in China. People find it an effective way to read novels written by native speakers with Chinese translation because they could learn English by making comparison of the two different languages-nglish and Chinese. Therefore, the translation of foreign novels will become a prosperous industry in the near future.Based on the English-Chinese translation of The Virgin of Small Plains, one of the best-selling novels in American, this essay tries to probe into some enlightenments the author acquired through the English-Chinese translation process, especially from the perspectives of some applied Translation Theory, translating strategies as well as the translation style, in the hope of providing some references for those translating beginners.This paper consists of three major parts. The first part presents author’s better understanding of some classic translation theories through the English-Chinese translation process, such as the translation standard of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance" and the principle of "functional equivalence". In the second part, the writer tries to summarize some translation strategies that have been used during the translation process, like amplification and omission of words, transforming words’ part of speech accordingly, etc. The third part analyzes the different styles of the original work and its translation version and tries to figure out the reasons. Paying close attention to the specific style of the translation material and the choosing of foreignization and domestication when come across cultural differences are also discussed. Some practical translation methods are put forward by the author based on her analysis and translation practice.
