Henry Alfred Kissinger is a famous diplomat and expert on international issues ofthe United States. In his main office during the 1960s and 1970s, Kissinger served asthe main role of American foreign policy, dominated a series of far-reaching impactof events on the international community, and served as an important policy advisoryrole of successive U.S. administrations in the following, and has been affecting thesuccessive policy setting of U.S. administrations. In this paper, the clue is the formation and development of Kissinger’s nuclearstrategy. On the basis of previous researches, combined with the major works ofKissinger himself, this paper expounds his military strategic thinking during the ColdWar nuclear strategy, as well as his series of practical activities from the Nixonadministration to the Ford administration. This paper discusses Kissinger’s nuclearstrategy during the Cold War through these three aspects in detail. In the first aspect,it talks about Kissinger’s understanding of deterrence during the cold war, as well asthe limited nuclear war strategy and the limited war strategy in the nuclear age; in thesecond aspect, this paper focus on Kissinger’s arms control and disarmament thoughton the basis of the limited war theory; in the last aspect, it discusses Kissinger’spolitical and diplomatic thought. The ultimate goal of Kissinger’s nuclear strategy isto serve for political, which means that he is not a purely military theory or nucleartheorists, more specifically, the politicians.Kissinger is famous for the book "nuclear weapons and foreign strategy”, but in factthe book is a crystallization of collective thinking, actually we can not deny theachievements of Henry Kissinger in this strategic area. Kissinger’s achievements inforeign affairs attract more attention, but in himself, in this particular era of the ColdWar, his nuclear negotiations, especially in the field of military strategy to promotethe results can not be ignored. From a substantive point of view, Kissinger did animportant adjustment for the U.S. in the nuclear age. We can not say that Kissinger’sstrategic thought is right or wrong. We can only say that Kissinger is a great realist. He follows his own political philosophy all his life, and struggles for the U.S. nationalinterests.
