The late Qing and Early Republic was a period of Chinese social and political unrest, different ideology in modern China. The defeat of the First Opium War and the sign of the Treaty of Nanking led the Chinese social nature have changed. As the expansion of social contacts between Chinese and Western, China felt the gap with the west increasingly. How to change the status of China became the highly concerned problems of insight man. Social reformation became one of the important ways. In Chinese society at that time, in addition to local politicians, missionaries came to China to participate the reformation activities. This paper expounds Edward Waite Thwing pastor of the United States is one of the typical pastor. Priest Edward Waite Thwing (1868——?), studied early in the Princeton theological seminary, by the U.S. overseas missionary movement influence, and came to China in August1887to his social activities. In1908he accepted the position of the International Reform Bureau, further fought prohibition of opium in China.Thwing’s activities in China, accomplished on the base of detailed social survey. It mainly divided into two aspects:the first one was prohibition of opium in China. The movement was Thwing’s main task that accepted in1908from the International Reform Bureau of the United States.He surveyed from China and abroad, investigated detailed from the opium plant, transportation, selling, snorting, etc. According to the flood of opium, he learned from scientific way for getting rid of opium, and admonished the Chinese addicts for giving up opium from the forbidden of transportation, selling, smoking and burning smoking set, and advocated people to have a good life ethos. While he actively cooperated with the government, continuous employed as consultant of opium prohibition by Sun Yat-sen temporary government, Yuan Shih-kai republic of the roc government, and put forward a series of practical measures to the drug ban. Prohibition of opium received a good effect. The second aspect is social activities of Thwing in the republic of China. Thwing proclaimed the customs and way of life of western civilized society to modern Chinese society. In China for decades, Thwing proclaimed and spreaded the western scientific way of life according to the actual need of the Chinese society and Chinese people, uninterrupted recommend the western scientific way of life. His practice objectively improved Chinese society into modernization.
